"...forming a set of morals and values that will go with me for the rest of my life."

I'm a grade 12 student and I've had the privilege of attending Island Catholic School for the past 13 years. People will come to me and ask what school I go to. When I reply St. Andrew's, the next question to follow is normally something along the lines of, "So you must be religious, right?" And it always astounds them when I tell them that I don't belong to a religion; I'm not a religious person. "Why do you go to the school then?"

After years of this conversation, I've narrowed it down to a few key aspects. The first being community. Looking back, our community has shown that we can come together with force and step up to the plate. A few years ago we had a student who needed extensive medical treatment. Within a few days, the school, lead by a group of senior students, raised over $3000 for his cause. It has been such a comfort to know that the community is behind you every step of the way; staff, students, and families. I believe that a crucial feature of our community is the size. We are blessed to have a small school in which each person is paid attention to as an individual. From a student's perspective, the amount of one on one teaching that occurs is nothing short of a blessing.

Finally, I'd like to share a quick story about a grade 8 experience. I walked into Mr. Brock's Grade 8 Religion class one morning expecting a typical wild experience. Mr. Brock didn't let us down. Out came a box filled with little colourful balls. He divided the class into 2 sides…and then gave each side half the balls. We were then told to have a ball war. It was one of the most ridiculous 45 minutes I have ever spent. Purpose of the class: to teach us about fair fighting. Out of all the things I was taught in grade 8, this was one of the few things that I remember. This is how I explain what religion at this school teaches me. Sure I learn the history and analyze the Bible, but I also have been forming a set of morals and values that will go with me for the rest of my life. They are the foundation of who I am.

"...my teachers taught me never to be afraid to dream wild and crazy dreams."

I am very excited to be able to link my Olympic journey, full of trials and tribulations, back to a very important time and place in my life:  St. Andrew's Regional High School.

When I was young, my family and my teachers taught me never to be afraid to dream wild and crazy dreams. The lesson went on though.  Dreams will remain dreams if you don't put them into action. No matter how big or small your dream is - never lose faith in your ability to achieve it.  The secret though, is in the plan.  Use the people around you, your family, friends, teachers and coaches, to help map out your journey.  Then, with hard work and dedication, you will see your dream become reality.

It took me 18 years to reach the Olympic Podium from the moment I let myself start to dream.  There were literally hundreds of people who helped me find my path - including teachers and staff from this school.  I am proud to have been a student at this school.  Remember, big things start small.

"...the faith aspect offered by the school has been its greatest gift to my education."

I feel truly blessed to have had the privilege of attending St. Andrew's Regional High School. St. Andrew's has given me the opportunity to grow spiritually, academically, artistically, and athletically. Because of the school's relatively small size, I have received the individual attention that is necessary to develop as a student and as a person. I have received this attention in all aspects of my learning experience, whether it was during English class, soccer practice, theatre performance, or jazz band. Though St. Andrew's has given me the opportunity to excel in all of these areas, and to build towards realizing my potential, I cannot emphasize enough that for me the faith aspect offered by the school has been its greatest gift to my education.

"...it has made me who I am.

At St. Andrew's, the tools to achieve excellence are embedded in the classroom and plethora of extra-curricular activities. The small class sizes and caring faculty allow for individual attention. Most significantly, St. Andrew's has given me every opportunity to achieve success. I am grateful for this school; it has made me who I am.
